With the loco over a pit, the works can be seen. Looking forward towards the cylinders the crank axle is nearest the camera with the big ends, eccentric sheaves. No wonder the USA preferred outside cylinders!

The footplate is traditional in layout, unlike the external appearance of the loco.

A close up of the BFB wheels, unique to Southern Railway locos designed by O.V.S. Bulleid. The loco has no running plate, the sand box is exposed, bolted to the frame and the sanding on the centre riving axle is arranged to deliver sand in either direction of travel.

The centre driving axle with those BFB wheels, but also the stripped down design is shown with the lack of a running plate. The power reverser, above the wheel, is another modern feature of a loco with a traditional British layout, but a very unconventional appearance.
