British Railways No. Unknown Liphook, Hampshire
The works of this crane are clearly revealed. Very hard to believe it was built as late as 1956. All those straight cut gears - the noise must have been wonderful.

The vertical boiler sitting on top of the heavy casting which would act as a counterweight.

Detail of the mechanisms. Look at all those levers to control it.

From the opposite side, there's those levers again. But see the little steam engine low down to the right of the boiler. You can just make out the Stephenson link valve gear. True steam age engineering.

Now, how to drive the wheels? Simple, just take the drive through straight cut bevel gears. No casings, open to the elements, and judging by the underside of the crane, liberal spraying of oil would take place.
