Lord Nelson may be staying longer at the Mid Hants Railway as it looks set be getting a fast track overhaul to steam again.

The overhaul is at an advanced stage at Alstom's Eastleigh works, which is due for closure this year. It is likely that the last railway item to leave the works could be Lord Nelson, which was built there in 1926.

How do you persuade the Chief Civil Engineer to allow you to run a big 4-6-0, which is over the axle load limits he's imposed? By some clever balancing, that's how. The SR 'Lord Nelson' class had 4 cylinders, but with the cranks set at 135o to one another, which produced a very smooth running loco and 8 exhaust beats per revolution of the wheels. The large, narrow firebox was tricky to fire and, in inexperienced hands, they could be shy steamers. All were named after prominent British naval personnel, and 'Lord Nelson' is the only survivor. After a main line career in preservation, where it wore Southern Railway's distinctive Malachite Green, it is currently undergoing restoration to working order. Rightly, it is part of the UK National Collection.
