The chime whistle that ex LNER A2 Pacific No. 60532 "Blue Peter", carries is not American as first thought, it is in facted from New Zealand, as its an ex New Zealand Railways 5 note chime whistle. It was fitted to "Blue Peter" in the 1970s by her then owner the late Geoff Drury following an overhaul at Doncaster Works then and has carried as an extra whistle since. But it does has an historic connection to the LNER, Sir Nigel Gresley who was the LNER’s chief mechanical engineer liked the sound of a Chime whistle when he heard the sound of one at the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway on one of their American outlined pacific locomotives, he would then fit Chime whistles to his A4 Class Pacific’s and P2 Class 2-8-2’s, British Railways would also fit Chime whistles to some of their BR Standard locomotives too. A New Zealand Railways 5 note chime whistle was fitted to LNER A4 Pacific No. 4492 "Dominion of New Zealand" from 1937, which it carried until being withdrawn from service in the 1960s. "Blue Peter" is currently the only mainline steam locomotive in the UK to have a New Zealand Railways 5 note chime whistle on and in use outside of New Zealand, although other steam engines such as Traction Engines and smaller narrow gauge steam locomotives in the UK have New Zealand Railways 5 note chime whistles also.

'Blue Peter' is the sole survivor of A H Peppercorn's A2 pacifics, designed as the LNER's last top link motive power. A good looking and effective loco, it did not enter service until after nationalisation, so it is, appropriately, in BR Brunswick green. This loco survived into Scotland's Indian Summer of steam on Aberdeen - Glasgow services, and was bought by the late Geoffrey Dury on withdrawal. Stored in York depot (today's Main Hall of the National Railway Museum), it attracted interest from the children's TV programme of the same name, (The loco was named after a racehorse, as were many LNER pacifics - an appropriate naming policy) and was restored at Doncaster Works. It never worked afterwards, and was stored for a while at a colliery near Wakefield, before moving to Dinting, near Glossop. At the time it was painted in LNER colours, as it might have appeared if nationalisation had not happened.  Passing into the stewardship of the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group, it was fully restored to BR livery at Wilton on Teesside and ran many miles on the main line until disaster struck near Durham. Getting into a slip, it was allowed to continue slipping for too long, and this wrecked the motion. For a while there was a chance that it might not run again, but repairs were made at Thornaby and it ran once more on the main line, and on preserved lines until its boiler ticket expired. Presently on display in Darlington.

Out of service in need of major boiler work in the firebox, this magnificent top performing Pacific has moved, in April 2003, to the North Road Museum in Darlington, for display. It is anticipated that it will be there for two years. This move changes its status and its location. It also relocates some of the Darlington exhibits to make room for this big loco. The really interesting thing is that it puts the Peppercorn A2 next door to the A1 Locomotive Trust's Darlington Locomotive Works, where the brand new Peppercorn A1 is under construction.
