An unusual beast by any standard, especially by UK standards. Articulated with two power bogies on the Meyer system, it has a circular marine type firebox so that the trailing bogie pivot can be accommodated.

In 2002, Monarch returned from the Ffestiniog Railway to the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway in Powys and is now being restored by volunteers to display condition. Monarch is the last narrow gauge steam locomotive built for industrial service in the UK, having started life serving paper mills at Sittingbourne (now the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway) before moving to the Welshpool & Llalfair Light Railway in 1966 and then to the Ffestiniog Railway (FR) in 1992. The FR intended to regauge her for use on the FR (which is 60cm gauge) and then on its sister line, the Welsh Highland Railway, but after dismantling, these plans were abandoned.
