Built at the LMS Crewe workshops, numbered 6235. In traffic 1939, was streamlined. Built with double chimney, first of the class. In 1946 the streamlining was removed to improve maintenance, the first of the class to be altered. Became British Railways 46235 in 1948. Withdrawn in 1964. Was displayed at Birmingham Museum of Science & Industry. Moved on a short length of track operated, I believe by compressed air. This museum closed and loco moved across Birmingham. Now in the Thinktank, Birmingham's new science museum, a museum built to mainly interest & educate children. Still plenty to see for adults. A good selection of exhibits.

One of the three preserved 'Princess Coronation' class of LMS pacific - the apex of LMS locomotive development. I say this, although there were plans for bigger, more powerful locos that were shelved because of the second world war.

Displayed in its namesake city it is the only one of the locos named after cities to survive. Impressive at rest or at speed, some of the class were streamlined originally, and the National Railway Museum's 'Duchess of Hamilton' has recently returned to that form. (Check out locomotive number 46229 in the search facility to see this)Whether you prefer it streamlined or not is up to you. It's certainly a handsome loco without the extra metal.
