This engine was renumber 886 at the request of the city of Peoria because that was the number of the last steamer to serve the city. The Rock had scrapped 886, but offered 887 for display, which the city gladly accepted.

I was one of the committee to save the engine in 1963. The picture the was mentioned was mine. In 1962 the engine was to be scrapped since it was in horrible shape in just 7 years. The Rock Island agreed to redo the engine and brought it down to the roundhouse. The asbestos was removed and wood spacers were put in for new boiler covering. After viewing at the Peoria station, it was moved to Detweiller Park in front of the golf course. I left to Texas in 1965 and the engine was moved some afterwards.

The old 886, as I know it, was first displayed in Glen Oak Park where it was fenced in, but as kids, we could still get to it and play on it. I do not know how many years it was there before it was moved to Detweiller Park. The information you have is that it was donated to the City of Peoria on 1955, but I have a photo of it sitting in front of the round house, where they were maintained, in the railroad yard of the Rock Island in Peoria. The pic is dated 1963. I can send the pic if you would like to see it. I got it off the internet.
