This is a Southern Railway class U loco. The origins of the class U go back to the class K tank locos which were of 2-6-4T wheel arrangement. In some circumstances, with poor track they became unstable and derailed. tests on the LNER on better track showed no problems, but the locos were re-built as Moguls, class U.
This one is from a later batch, ordered as tank engines but built as 2-6-0 tender engines from the start. As tender engines they were a successful design.
