The Plym Valley Railway has successfully purchased ex British Sugar Corporation, Andrew Barclay built 0-4-0ST Works No. 2248 "Albert", from her owner following their appeal raised to buy the locomotive.

The Plym Valley Railway is looking to buy ex British Sugar Corporation Andrew Barclay built 0-4-0ST Works No. 2248 "Albert" from her owner for futher use as their own steam locomotive, to help reduced the need of hiring in a steam locomotive per season. An appeal to help raise £40,000 to buy the locomotive has been set up which details can be found on their website and social media pages.

Following its completion of a lengthy overhaul the former British Sugar Corporation Andrew Barclay built 0-4-0ST Works No. 2248 "Albert" is now back in steam again and is currently being tested before entering service again at the Plym Valley Railway very soon.

Albert is undergoing a fast track overhaul where it is hoped that the locomotive will back in service for the Christmas season later this year.

Albert was built in 1948, for the British Sugar Corporation and worked at their Worcester and Suffolk plants. The engine was fitted with a steam powered electric generator and a large electric headlight, but only the brackets now remain. In preservation she has been at the Nene Valley Railway, before moving to the East Kent railway. Since September 2007, Albert has been resident the Plym Valley Railway, Plymouth,Devon. Empty weight: 28 tons. Driver diam: 3'7". Tractive effort: 19430. Cylinders; 2x(16"x24")
