The JS 8419 is the only Chinese JS Class 2-8-2 in the United States of America and one of a number of Chinese JS Class 2-8-2s that are still running in the world today along with a number of JS Class 2-8-2s still at work at Sandaoling in Xinjiang in North West China. JS 8419 was one of the very last JS Class 2-8-2s to be built at Datong works in 1988 which saw the end of steam locomotive construction in the world there. All though steam locomotive construction continued in China with the SY Class 2-8-2 till 1999 for use on industrial railways in China. But 8419 was the very first Chinese built steam locomotive to be built and shipped new to the United States of America for use on a American Tourist Railroad in 1989. To show friendship between China and the U.S.A. 8419 carries the Chinese and American Flags on its skyline casing round the chimney or smoke stack as its known in America. Plus a message in Chinese of friendship which is still on the tender of the locomotive today.

Due to low funds, 8419 will have to be out of service next year for the beginning. The earliest that 8419 can return to steam if funds go up will be in July.

2017 will be the last year for 8419 to operate for a while as it will need to have its 15 year inspection afterwards.

There are many places in Thailand is available to put the Locomotive tour programs for the tourist, history memorandums, and also for the promotions by others playland. Like in Kanchanaburi. I love the locomotives very much. It is the good memory. The railroad of kanchanaburi ( The dead Railways of River Hwai ) will be one of the best for Locomotive.

Report, The JS8419 is operational I went down there and finally got to ride on it again and on on its first run of the season. I rode in the Rock Island Caboose a.k.a. the red Caboose. It was great on the trip back which is the real fun part in which it moves forward with the cars behind it and sense that caboose iis the first car right behind it and at the top part of it where I got excellent pictures of it which I'm Planning to put inthe photo album as soon as I can. One of them Shows it crossing the Bass Point Creek High Bridge. It should be noted that JS8419 is a lot quicker than the diesels I mean thats the fastest I've ever gone on the railroad.

The JS8419 has had the crest on the top of its front headlight removed. Also the car right behind that caboose in the picture is a trolley that is not on the train now. Plus they have a brand new valley car hooked up behind the red caboose. In addition to the Excursion train they have gotten another coach for it.

As an steam engineer for the BSVRR, I am happy to report that that 8419 is up and running. 8419 was out of service for the 2002 season for a 1472 inspection and to comply with new FRA regulations.It never left the proporty all work was done in house.8419 ran in 2003 every weekend from end of May til end of Oct.8419 will run in 2004 so come and see it

this is the newest REAL steam locomotive in the USA.
made in china for $350,000
but $100,000 was for shipping that is why the B&S RR wanted to buy a new one. it would have less maintainance costs and restoration costs.

A friend of mine visited Boone & Scenic Valley during early July 2002. During his visit, 8419 was not in operation and the staff said it was in Kansas City for a rebuild. I have now heard rumors that the engine may not run again because funds are not available to complete the rebuild.
