This engine is no longer at stone mountain. It has been moved to the three rivers railroad in knoxville tn where there are plans to restore it

Either one would be a better place for the engine than Stone Mountain! Also, I think the status should probably be changed to "stored."

The SA&AP 60 actually needs to come back to Texas! Our organization, the San Antonio Railroad Heritage Museum, has discussed trying to acquire the #60 and bring her back to San Antonio, TX. Once here, we would undertake the project of restoring her to operation. Once restored, she would be operated on her native trackage where she once hauled revenue freight for the SA&AP Ry., all those many years ago. Since this is the last SA&AP locomotive in existence, it should only be appropriate that she return home after a long and successful career away from Texas. Driver size is incorrect in the listing. The drivers are 62".

Someone needs to take this engine to Duluth, at least there it would have a chance at operation again, and could join its longtime companion, Red River & Gulf #104.  It would be a great spectacle to see these two doubleheading on the museum grounds!

This locomotive last operated under steam in 1983. The drivers were removed for turning and were returned in mid 1984. At this time, the change was being made towards not running steam at all.

 The Stone Mountain Scenic RR had used a diesel assist since the mid 70s. The diesel was only assisting the steam locomotives when climbing the 2% grade on the backside of the mountain. The Stone Mountain Memorial Assoc. took over in the early 80s and just didn't want to maintain steam operations and the operation turned more to the steam locomotives assiting the disel. then finally no steam at all after the spring of 1986. 

 Later this locomotive would be repaired enough to be pushed by diesel. As of this writing (May 2004, it has been parked for about 2 years.

I ran the Stone Mountain steam locomotives in their last years of service and sorely miss them. I had hoped to revive steam when I was shop foreman in 1998 but the Silver Dollar City people (operators of Stone Mtn Park) had no interest except in making quick cash.

Was originally a Steam Loco, but in the 80's Stone Mountain got tired of Maintaining it and Hooked a Diesel Up Behind It.
