Blackie is The first steam locomotive in South Africa. It arrived by sea, dismantled and landed in lighters on 8 September 1859. Blackie worked for Messrs E & J Pickering on construction of the Cape Town to Wellington railway line. Worked at other sites until 1883.

Overhauled in 1897 for an Exhibition. From 1913 to 1928 displayed at Cape Town railway station. When electrifying the suburban tracks at Cape Town station, Blackie was in the way so was sent to Salt River works for scrapping. Instead was displayed at the works. In 1960 was returned and put on display at a rebuilt Cape Town station.
