Further to my earlier note I have discovered more about this loco. . The normal livery for these locos was lined black with red wheels. 475.1142 was however selected for special exhibition and publicity runs and painted green. It even spent six months in China on such duties.

The class 475.1s were arguably one of the most technically advanced steam locos of the post WW2 years. The design was developed in collaboration with French engineers. One exterior feature of this are the flamboyant smoke deflectors which are reminiscent of those carried by the SNCF 2-8-2 class 141Rs, imported from the USA after WW2 time. This collaboration was cut short by the Communist take over of Czechoslovakia.

During and after the Korean War, various East European railway administrations expressed their solidarity with the DPRK by the delivery of new steam locos. The Czech Skoda Works built a further 25 4-8-2s for North Korea in 1951.These are reported as carrying their Czech numbers 475.1148-1171 in North Korea.

Poland followed, possibly in 1952, with three 2-6-2 passenger locos of class 0149 as well as an unknown number of TKt48 2-8-2TS.

The 4-8-2s were still reported at work in 1989 but no 4-8-2 is currently on the Steam loco database for N. Korea. The county remains a challenge for the steam enthusiast.

The attached photo shows ex CSR(CSD) No. 475.1142 which at the time (1994) was operational and based in Prague. I believe this is the loco refered to here which is incorrectly shown as 475.114. No. 475.1142 was among the last of the 147 built for the CSD in 1950, works no. 2665.

Here's a sample of what Skoda could do - without the help of Volkswagen! It certainly puts the old 'Skoda jokes' about cars into perspective - a magnificent machine by anyone's standards.
