59609 in Mikasa and 29622 in Niigata are believed to have had their identities mixed up when sitting together in the bone yard at Otaru Chikkou Depot awaiting disposal in 1975-76. Both locomotives were retired from Iwamizawa Daiichi depot in 1975, and presumably dragged to Otaru with their plates removed, hence the mix-up. Photographs exist of the two locomotives sitting coupled together with the wrong numbers for each locomotive painted on their smokebox fronts. The locomotive preserved in Mikasa wearing 59609 is actually 29622, and the locomotive in Niigata is believed to be 59609.
