The status of the most famous steam locomotive in South Africa No. 3450 ‘The Red Devil’ the unique Class 26 4-8-4 should now say operational as the locomotive steamed and ran for the first time in 15 years. No. 3450 will be operated by Ceres Rail Company between Ceres and Robertson which details will on the Ceres Rail website.

Overhaul work on the most famous steam locomotive in South Africa No. 3450 ‘The Red Devil’ is in its final stages as the locomotive is to make its first mainline run for the first time since the winter of 2004 with Ceres Rail on the weekend of July 13th to 15th 2018. On a special 3 day trip from Cape Town to Robertson and back with some photo run bys as well.

The most famous steam locomotive in South Africa No. 3450 ‘The Red Devil’ has been moved from Bellville South Africa to Worcester for restoration to full working order by Ceres Rail Company.

It has been announced that South African locomotive ‘The Red Devil’ is to be restored to working order. It was subsequently stripped of many of its modifications, and it is not clear whether it will be outshopped in its 1981 form or not. It last ran in 2003.

At this time (Nov. 2012) 3450 has been in under cover storage at Cape Town station OOU for several years.

This engine was modified extensively by David Wardale. The detail are in "The Red Devil and Other Tales From the Age of Steam".
