I spoke with the boilermaker accompanying No. 844 on the New Mexico and Arizona Centennial tour, and he said that there has never been, nor is there currently even a thought towards swapping out boilers between 838 and 844.

This unit has a cracked frame, it will not be restored. I have heard that the boiler might be removed and exchanged with #844's boiler.

seeing the 838 would be really cool to see it operating with the 844. seeing them doubleheading would be a impressing sight to see. i wonder if the up is ever going to get it operating again?

this engine is in the two-tone gray livery.  They say that the boiler of this locomotive is in better condition than the battle-worn 844's.

It's stored in the roundhouse in Cheyenne.  It's used for parts for 844.
