I heard somewhere that someone wanted to puill this locomotive out of Steamtown to use for parts on the Big Boy that is under restoration

4012,like the other UP 4000s is probably never going to be steamed up again, they were excessive in their day, and even more so today. 4012 is especially unlikely to ever be operable due to the area it it in. Steamtown and the rest of the Eastern and Midwestern United States has no facility big enough to hold it, and Steamtown cannot even turn it since their turntable was not built for giants. Plus the UP never built their giants for eastern trackage, or pulling passenger cars. These giants were good for pulling heavy freight over vast plains and tough grades. Railroads in the Pocono mountains are too windy for all steam giants other than those designed to be used used on logging railroads.

4012 will not likely run again. The cost is too high, the roundhouse at Steamtown is too short to store it and the turntable is too small for this giant.

I saw this loco in back in the 60s when I was 8 or so and Steamtown was located in Bellows Falls Vermont, and again in 1994 in Scranton. Sure would be nice to see one of these run someday!

On display outside at Steamtown which is now a National Historic Site and run by the National Park Service.  While well preserved, one person I spoke with in the park's restoration shops put the cost of restoring her to operating status in the 7 figure range and, therefore, never likely to happen. A beautiful machine.

This powerful big boy is the largest locomotive on the roster. This 4-8-8-4 might run again in near future. Today this powerful locomotive is on display. Steamtown is one of the most known railroad museum in the country.

the 4012 is now displayed in the steamtown yard. it was kept at the lackawanna station hotel until a bridge between the hotel and the yard was rebuilt.
