This is the official website of the Middleton Railway Trust, which operates the world's oldest working railway with a continuous record of service [since 1758!]. In June 1812, the world's first commercially viable steam locomotives began work on our railway. In June 1960, our railway became the first standard gauge line to run a passenger service operated entirely by unpaid volunteers. Almost 50 years later, the railway is still entirely volunteer-operated. Recently, we have opened a new building where visitors can view a selection of our locomotives and discover the unique history of the Middleton Railway and of the important Leeds locomotive-building industry.
