310.23 at Wiener Neustadt, with a ÖBB special on 21 August 1987. One of Europe's leading locomotive engineers, Karl Gölsdorf designed this class of express passenger 4 cylinder compound locos in 1911. Like the American Berkshires they featured a leading pony truck and a trailing four wheeled truck to support a generously dimensioned wide firebox. Notice the high stepping driving wheels for express speed and the large diameter piston valves for good gas flow. A classic loco.

Front-end detail of 2-6-4 No.310.23 on display at the spectacular DB Chemnitz Works Open Day on 25 June 1994. Just look at what Karl Gölsdorf achieved with this loco back in 1911 with it's big wide firebox and those massive cylinders and generously proportioned piston valves! he certainly knew a thing or two about locomotive engineering.
