The front end, showing the air brake pump mounted on the side of the smokebox. These locos were built as a wartime measure and many crossed the English Channel following the invasion of Europe in 1944. Since they were to work European rolling stock they needed air brake equipment in addition to the vacuum brake used in many parts of the UK.
