Detail of the rods and Walschaerts valve gear on the left hand side of the loco. On these four cylinder locos the outside valve gear also operated the valves for the inside cylinders via rocking levers. The connection to the lever is out of shot on the left.

The trailing coupled axle on the left hand side of the loco, showing the connection for the speedometer drive. The instrument was made by Smiths who also manufactured instrumentation for cars.

Inside the cab of this powerful Pacific. Notice that it is left hand drive, with a screw reverser and traditional regulator handle. Non British viewers may wonder what the sunflower - like dial is. This is for the Automatic Warning System, a British Railways fitment to advise drivers of signal aspect. failure to acknowledge the visual and audible signal would result in a brake application.
