Overhaul after repatriation completed, we see the Great Western four cylinder arrangement with divided drive. The outside pair of cylinders are set back and drive the middle axle whilst the inside pair are further forward driving the leading coupled axle. The piston rod from the right hand inside cylinder is visible through the opening in the frame. Only one set of valve gear for each pair of cylinders with a rocking lever to drive the outside valve from the inside valve gear. This is visible forward of the outside cylinder.

Still some work to do on the paintwork but the typical brass nameplate shines.

Pendennis Castle and Flying Scotsman meeting up again at Didcot on 31st May 2025. This was the first time that the two locos had been seen together since the pair met in Australia in the late 1980s. As the number of visitors shows, it was a popular event and our correspondent was there to record the event.

Flashback to the loco's time in Australia: No. 4079 'Pendennis Castle' on her first run on the Hammersley Iron Railway in Western Australia in 1978. The setting is in the arid area of the iron ore hauling railway from the mine at Mount Tom Price and the port at Dampier. Ore trains are very long hauled by Australian built versions of American designed locos as shown here.

Pendennis Castle and Flying Scotsman meeting up again at Didcot on 31st May 2025. Two very different approaches to express passenger loco design. Pendennis Castle is a four cylinder 4-6-0 with a narrow firebox whilst Flying Scotsman is a three cylinder Pacific with a wide firebox.
