The boiler unit for this narrow gauge loco is slung between the two power bogies. Powerful and flexible, these ex-South African Railways locos are ideal for the heavy gradients and the tight curves of the Welsh Highland route between Caernarfon and Porthmadog. The builder's plate, carried on the central girder that carries the boiler is from the firm that first built Garratt locomotives. Manchester was one of the centres of British locomotive building for export, and Garratts were Beyer Peacock's speciality.
