The footplate is open to the elements, no fun in a quarry on the side of a Welsh mountain in a rainstorm..

Whilst all is shiny and polished on the outside, the less visible parts of this quarry Hunslet tell a different story and give an impression of the everyday condition of a locomotive.

Here we see the eccentrics for the Stephenson link valve gear. The ones for the right hand cylinder are clearly shown, but you can just see the top of one of the left hand cylinder's pair.

Moving towards the front of the loco we now see the expansion link and die block of one of the sets of valve gear.

Next we now see the valve rod of one of the sets of valve gear. with some linkage, possibly for the brakes.

The top of the firebox carries the safety valves and the all important boiler pressure gauge.
