The general arrangement of a De Winton engine is shown well here. The vertical boiler defines the type, with the cylinders fixed to it working vertically on a crank axle. The safety valves are on the side of the boiler and, on the extreme left of the photo, the water tank can just be seen.

Looking down towards the crank axle shows the eccentrics and their eccentric rods in the centre with the slide bars and connecting rods either side.

The wheels are linked by a coupling rod. After the rest of the loco this looks quite conventional!.

The view from the opposite end of the loco shows the driving position. The regulator (red) on the side of the boiler directly controls the steam supply to the cylinders on the other side of the boiler. To the right is the reverser and the boiler pressure gauge and water level indicator are in the centre of the photo. Notice the hand rail on the boiler. You can well believe that the driver needed something to hang on to!
