The assembly of parts seen from the rear of the nearest chassis. Notice the prominent drawbar - clearly from a tender loco. The saddle tank is nothing to do with that.

It is, at first, difficult to know what's here - a locomotive jigsaw puzzle with the parts of two locomotives stored together. However, the boiler is large enough for a 2-6-2, and the three crank pins and counterweights gives the right number of axles, with the modern outside cylinder block to the right of the photo. Ignore the saddle tank - that's from another, smaller loco.

Looking from the from front of the chassis, we can see the cylinder assembly bolted to the chassis. The castings on top of the cylinder block are typical of locos supplied to South African Railways of the period. Notice, too, the saddle for the boiler supporting the frame of a different loco dumped on top of it.

The only loco at Aberystwyth that can fit this description must be SAR 146. We hope you agree!
