No. 231G 558 is one of only two of this type of SNCF Pacific 4-6-2 in working order. This type of locomotive has some UK connection as in 1929 French locomotive engineer André Chapelon rebuilt one of the Paris-Orleans four cylinder compound Pacifics with many modern improvements, and the results were so successful that other locomotive designers around the world would take on. Among them was the LNERs Chef Engineer Sir Nigel Gresley who was intensely interested in all aspects of the work, particularly in Chapelon’s approach to thermodynamics. Gresley applied the lessons learned, including the Kylchap blast pipe (Kylala-Chapelon) Double Chimney, to the A4 Pacific 4468 "Mallard" which helped earned it the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126mph.
