A most historic locomotive because it represents the beginnings of the family of locos produced by Beyer Peacock over many years and of various wheel arrangements and gauges.

The basic design comes from the Norwegian engineer Carl Pihl who worked with Beyer Peacock with this narrow gauge design. Beyer Peacock took the design with its leading Bissell truck and short coupled wheelbase and applied it in the Isle of Man with a series of 2-4-0T engines of three foot gauge, several of which survive, some in working order. On the Metropolitan Railway - London's earliest underground route, a standard gauge 4-4-0T derivative operated.

Further examples are preserved of locos that operated in Spain, Australia and other parts of the world. But this is the loco that represents the start of the whole story. You might like to find some of the others by searching the site for Beyer Peacock locos.
