The name of the organization, on their website, with the IRS and with the state of Kentucky is Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation. The requested change is incorrect and will NOT be made.

The former Nickel Plate Railroad Baldwin built 2-8-2 No. 587 has a bright future ahead as the has had a change of ownership. The locomotive which was a popular mainline excursion engine, which was restored and operated from 1988 until 2003, has been sold to a private individual who intends to continue run it on as a fan trip excursion engine. The new owner of 587, who wishes to remain anonymous, plans for the locomotive to remain in Ravenna under the care of Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. for the foreseeable future.

Some big news has come that former Nickel Plate Railroad Baldwin built 2-8-2 No. 587 is to relocated to the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp (KSHC) new site at Ravenna in Kentucky for eventual re-build. This is due to its current home the Indiana Transportation Museum which has been located in Noblesville, Indiana for over thirty years, has recently been handed a court order to vacate their city-owned property after a nearly-year-long legal battle with the city. The locomotive will move to its new home on the 12th of July 2018. The Indiana Transportation Museum will still retain ownership of the locomotive but its restoration will be contracted by the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp till time and money will allow.

587 IS undergoing restoration at the ITM most of the work is done by the contractor Bob Gold right now and he only has limited availability. we are getting closer to finishing the work needing welding certifications and there i plenty of other things volunteers can do

Now the ITM is saying NKP #587 will be back in service by late 2010 or early 2011, if the remainder of the restoration goes as scheduled. Unfortunately, I myself might miss this great undertaking now unless I go back and visit where I lived in Indianapolis. (I am currently living in Baltimore, Maryland)

Copied from the ITM webpage... Update - February 12, 2008: Steam engine Nickel Plate 587 is under restoration in our shop. In April of 2007, the Indiana Transportation Museum received a Transportation Enhancement grant for the restoration and heavy maintenance of 587. ITM volunteers were eager to start the two year process. By the next week end, the tubes and flues were being removed. In June, the boiler was cleaned using commercial high pressure water jets and by mid July, the cab was ready to come off. The cab, which weighs about a ton, was set into cribbing built to support it. At the end of August, the boiler and firebox was almost ready for the Ultra-sonic testing. Each course of the boiler and firebox, inside and out was marked into twelve inch squares. Each square was labeled with its coordinates. then two half dollar sized spots were ground smooth in each. That’s approximately 2400 spots to Ultra-sonic test. ITM volunteers and contractors tested and noted each reading. In November, the results were sent to our engineer, who figured the material thickness and safety factors we need to operate. This year is NKP 587’s Ninetieth Anniversary. There is no better way to honor that milestone other than to get her back under steam and pulling passengers. ** I emailed them and was told by reply that they hope to have her operational as soon as late this coming fall, or by spring of '09. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, as I can't wait to see her steaming again! Gregory

According to a recent phone call I got on the voice mail, the museum is currently putting no.587 back togeather, which means it possible for it to be operational in either 2007 or 2008. Watch the museum's web site for further updates!!

NKP #587 starred in the movie "587: The Great Train Robbery". The synopsis is that a 10 year old boy named Alex, finds the 587 in a "Junkyard", (really the ITM Yard) where the owner of the scrap company says the 2-8-2 would be scrapped in 2 days!! Then, Alex, his sister, Molly, and the ex-engineer of the 587 divise a plan to save the engine. Will they succeed? Watch the movie and find out!!!

David Farlow of the Whitewater Valley Railroad supplied the following information:

This one is about 20 minutes from my house.  If there were no FRA regulations, I'd say it could be "operational" with a relatively minor amount of work.  But, given the Part 230 rules, the engine needs its full form 4 documentation that will require essentially a full boiler tear down and some running gear inspection work.   While some grant money was awarded a few years ago, the 20% match has not been raised.  Due to the amount of work that is needing to be done and the relative lack of progress, I'd suggest that it isn't really operational.
