It has been suggested that Hunslet built J94 Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 68030 (ex NCB Wolstanton Colliery No. 52 "Josiah Wedgwood") might be converted to oil-firing to provide the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with steam motive power along the line that is safe to use during the dry summer months and at times of high fire risk than coal-fired steam locomotives.

Due to some problems between its owning group and the Churnet Valley 68030 has left the Churnet Valley Railway and has been moved back to the Llangollen Railway where its overhaul will continue and it looks likely 68030 will be part of the Llangollen Railways spot hire fleet when its back in steam.

Hi,

Re 68030, the locomotive is owned by The Class 4 Preservation Trust and is currently on hire to The East Lancashire Railway at Bury, Lancashire.  It was loaned to Barrow Hill for a couple of days for their Steam gala but is now en-route back to Bury.

Details can be found at www.80136.co.co - 80136 also being owned by the Trust.

Kind Regards,

Ian Bowland

52 is the classic industrial loco. This ubiquitous design is an 18" inside cylinder Hunslet design that was built by many other builders during the Second World War and afterwards. Known as 'Austerities' because they were the product of an austerity programme at the time, they were, and are, widespread throughout the UK. Today its preserved lines that use them, but in the past it was docks and mines and factories.

Numbered 68030, it is liveried to recreate one of the locos bought by the LNER after the Second World War, and classified by them as J94. They were used as docks shunters in the Hartlepools and as works pilots at North Road loco works, Darlington. Later, famously, some were transferred to the Cromford and High Peak section of the London Midland Region, where they tackled the fearsome gradients of 1 in 14 (7%).In the true J94's the bunker was extended upwards between the cab windows to increase the coal capacity.

This one is working on the Churnet Valley Railway, a preserved portion of the former North Staffordshire Railway.
