The Earl is seen at Frisby-on-the-Wreake level crossing near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, UK on Sunday 7 December 2008. It is working the 'Melton Mowbray Victorian Christmas Fayre' special from Birmingham, operated by Tyseley based Vintage Trains. Melton Mowbray is famous for its Pork Pies and is the home of Stilton Cheese. This was one of the locos first outings since restoration.

A most significant British express passenger loco, the GWR's 'Castle' class with its divided drive 4 cylinder layout was developed by Collett from Churchward's revolutionary 'Star' class (See 4003 'Lode Star' at York).

Comparison of the Album photo which shows the engine in Barry scrapyard condition, shorn of its coupling rods and outside connecting rods, as well as its number and name plates and the 2008 photo of it in recently restored condition, back on the main line, tells a great story of the preservation movement in the UK.
