The veteran former Consett Steel & Iron Company 1883 Kitson built 0-6-0PT A No. 5 has been taken out service for the foreseeable future. The locomotive is to be put on display in the museum at the North Tyneside Steam Railway as there are no current plans to overhaul it anytime soon. As it would need a new boiler to be built for it.

Currently out of traffic waiting for a boiler inspection.

I believe my grandfather drove engine No.1 at Consett Iron Company between 1940 and 1970, approximately.

The classic 'long boiler' engine in tank loco form. Very much favoured in the 19th Century in the North East by minor railways and major railways too. The wheels are not evenly spaced with the trailing axle much closer to the driving axle than the leading axle is located. This leaves the firebox overhanging the rear axle, and can produce a 'waddle' if the speed rises too high. A rare survivor. I remember seeing one shunting the coke works near Winlaton in the early 1960's.

Recently appeared at the 1st birthday celebrations of Shildon Locomotion museum - in steam, of course.
