The overhaul on former NCB Ashington Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns built 0-6-0T No. 40 is picking up as work on it has been a bit slow but is progressing. As work on the inner firebox has now been complete and has been fitted to the boiler. The boiler will be brought back to Wolsingham depot in the early New Year where it will be refitted to the locomotive for final completion work.

No40 is back again after big end problems and was running well today, August 29th 2011. I've moved the old photo of the loco when it was stored at the Colne Valley Railway and placed it in the album. There's also a couple of additional photos of it running round at Stanhope in the album.

Poor No 40 has been withdrawn after a brief return to service as a result of a hot axlebox. It is hoped that it will be repaired in time for a return to the rails by September 19/20th for a special event on the Weardale line.

No 40 worked on the Ashington colliery system of the National Coal Board, in Northumberland. One of its main tasks was working the miners' trains composed of old coaches, many of them ex-North Eastern Railway, to and from the pit. There were two sets in operation - 'clean' to take the men to work, and 'dirty' to bring them back at the end of their shift.

After its time in Essex, it returned to the North East and should be working on the Weardale Railway in the summer of 2009.

It looks likely that this loco will return to operations in the summer of 2008.

Moved to Tyseley for firebox repairs to leaks that emerged in early operations in Weardale, so Weardale is back to diesel power only.

Now bought by the Weardale Railway. It arrived at Wolsingham on 3rd of November 2006 and is in working order. The move brings it closer to Tyneside, where it was built.
