Its been announced that the ex GWR 28XX Class 2-8-0 No. 2857, will be overhauled by Riley & Son Engineering Ltd at their works at Bury in Lancashire, following an agreement made between the owners the 2857 Society and Riley & Son Engineering to overhaul the locomotive to steam again. It is anticipated that the bottom end of the locomotive will move to Bury in April 2026, while the boiler is removed and worked on in house at Bridgnorth for attention in the Severn Valley Railway’s own boiler shop there.

With the situation on locomotive overhauls being limited in the current hard times that have hit hard at the Severn Valley Railway, ex GWR 28XX Class 2-8-0 No. 2857 has been cleanned up and has been moved to the carriage shed at Kidderminster in Worcestershire for the time being while the owners the 2857 Society plan for the next overhaul.

Having hauled its final trains at the Severn Valley Railway, ex GWR 28XX Class 2-8-0 No. 2857 has now been withdrawn from service having reached the end of its 10 year boiler ticket. For now No. 2857 will now be in line waiting for its next overhaul to be carried out.

2857 has been granted a 6 month extension to her boiler certificate, meaning she will be able to see out the rest of the 2022 season on the SVR. She will appear at the Autumn steam gala and haul the Santa Specials. In addition, the 2857 Society have plans for a farewell special train for the engine.

Following its visit to the Mid Hants Railway or the Watercress Line as it is known ex GWR 28XX class 2-8-0 No. 2857 will visit the West Somerset Railway for their Spring Steam Gala from the 5th to 8th of May 2022.

The ex GWR 28XX class 2-8-0 No. 2857 is to visit the Mid Hants Railway as their second visiting locomotive for their Spring Steam Gala from the 29th of April to the 2nd of May 2022.

The visit of ex GWR 28XX class 2-8-0 No. 2857 to the North Norfolk Railway has also been postponed due to the Spring Steam Gala being reset to a later date.

The ex GWR 28XX class 2-8-0 No. 2857 will be visiting the North Norfolk Railway for the very first time for their Spring Steam Gala Weekend from the 27th to 29th of March 2020.

No. 2857 is set to visit the East Lancashire Railway for their Autumn Steam Gala weekend on October 19th to 21st 2018. Where it will be joined by GWR 4200 Class 2-8-0T No. 4270 from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway for the event there.

No. 2857 is celebrating its 100th birthday this weekend at the Severn Valley Railway in style at there Goods Gala from June 2nd to 3rd 2018. The highlight of which will be 2857 working a special steam age goods train alongside a GBRf Class 66 on a special modern fright at the event.

The GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0 No. 2857 which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year will also be visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for there Autumn Steam Gala on the weekend of the 28th to the 30th of September 2018.
