This big Barclay side tank was supplied to the Dalmellington Iron Works in Ayrshire to haul coal from the associated mines. The iron works closed, but the mines continued as the Waterside system, and they were good customers of Andrew Barclay & son. No 17 retained its identity throughout its career, despite changes of ownership along the way, ending up owned by the National Coal Board, West Ayr Area. It slogged up the steep grades of the Waterside system, linking Pennyvenie mine with washeries at Dunaskin. It's not the only Waterside survivor, and the photo shows that in August 2003 it sat around a small turntable at the Tanfield Railway alongside two other Barclays.
