The overhaul and rebuild on ex LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No. 61264, is progressing on in the workshops at Ruddington on the Great Central Railway (Nottingham), as work is underway to remove the old tender tank in readiness for its replacement new tender tank. While this is going other work is underway as during its forthcoming overhaul, the B1 Locomotive Trust owners of No. 61264, intends to to leave the engine’s chassis largely intact as except for needing new tyres, there is virtually nothing wrong with the ‘bottom end’ of the locomotive. As said before in addition to the original design of No. 61264 is it will now also be fitted with the European Train Control System (ETCS) for future mainline running.

As part of the overhaul and rebuild on ex LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No. 61264, the locomotive is to have a brand new redisigined tender tank that will have space for the locomotive to be fitted with the European Train Control System (ETCS). ECTS is being introduced on the East Coast Mainline as part of the East Coast Digital Programme, along the route which was very familiar to No. 61264 in the days of steam. As well as making No. 61264 compatible with ECTS, the new tender tank will include a number of other refinements aimed at improving its functionality for the footplate crews. These include extending a diagonal plate to avoid the build-up of coal which is difficult to retrieve. This presents a particular problem when 61264 is operating on mainlines, where the overhead live wires prevent crew members from going into the coal space to rake it out. A manhole-like feature in the floor of the tank will also be included, to allow easier access when maintenance work and inspections are being carried out. Storage and cupboard space have also been improved to keep essential kit secure and out of the way. Despite these many modernising changes, the tender will still look the same from the outside and the locomotive’s appearance will not be altered. The new tender tank is just part of an extensive range of tasks being carried out on the Thompson B1 4-6-0, which will also include building a new inner firebox and replacing the locomotive’s tyres. This work is being carried out at the Great Central Railway in Nottingham, (which is what the Nottingham Heritage Railway is now known as) not far from where No. 61264 was based from 1960 until being withdrawn from service by British Railways in 1967. The Thompson B1 Locomotive Trust, which owns No. 61264, has set up a crowdfunding appeal to cover the costs of the new tender tank, which details can be found on their website and social media pages.

The overhaul on ex LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No. 1264 will soon get underway at the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre on the Great Central Railway Nottingham (formely known as the Nottingham Heritage Railway), as work will first focus on the tender as a brand new tender tank with an incresed water capacity will be built for it, as work on the locomotive it self will be a big one, as the wheels need new tyres and heavy boiler work as a new inner firebox is needed along with other things to be carried out. The B1 Locomotive Trust are looking for new memebers to join them in helping them and are appealing for donations to help as well which detials can be found on their website and social media pages.

Former LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 No. 1264 has arrived at its new home at the Nottingham Heritage Railway at Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, where its overhaul and rebuild will get underway there. Its move to the Nottingham Heritage Railway formerly known as the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) is a bit of a spiritual homecoming as No. 1264 (as 61264) ended its career with British Railways when it was withdrawn from service at nearby Colwick depot in 1967, having spent a period of time acting as a stationary boiler there, and its also an historically appropriate base for the locomotive as LNER B1s, including 1264, were regular performers on the Great Central mainline.
