Monday, Aug. 07,2006 an axel on No. 12 sheared while hauling passengers, and now is out of service on the Gorgetowntown Loop Railroad

This engine now lives in Silver Plume Colorado at the Georgetown Loop Railroad because Railstar took over the operations. #12 and Colorado & Southern 2-6-0 #9 are the operating engines now

"Faja" is incorrect, this locomotive is owned by the Colorado Historical Society, not Ron Trottier. Railstar Corp, Trottier's organization, was selected to operate the new operation on the Georgetown Loop site. The locomotive went into regular service there on May 27, 2005, doubleheading with a diesel. Its maximum capacity is 3 cars, versus the typical 9 hauled by one of the GLR Inc's Shays or outside-frame Consols. Location should be Silver Plume, CO at the Georgetown Loop.

The engine locomotive is now owned by Trottier.

#12 Arrived in Silver Plume, CO for use on the Georgetown Loop on 3/24/2005. Location should be changed to Silver Plume, CO. Not sure if the locomotive is owned by Railstar or the Colorado Historical Society.

#12 is believed to have been purchased by Railstar or the Colorado Historical Society for use on their Georgetown Loop operation.

Weight on drivers is 60,200#.  I found this information on Bruce Pryor's narrowmind.railfan.net site, which features the Baldwin builder's photograph and specs for this engine.  These specs list the locomotive's weight as 81,800#.  Perhaps 46 tons is the working weight, or else the loco gained some weight after its new boiler was added?

This is from a plaque hanging in the depot at Silverwood:

Silverwood's #12 is a 2-6-2 Prairie type built by Baldwin in 1928 for the Kahului Rairoad Co. of Hawaii.  It ran as their #12 hauling pineapples until 1966 and it was the last steam engine used commercially used in Hawaii.  An individual from California bought the #12 and dissassembled it and moved it back to the mainland. The locomotive was then bought by Scenic Railway in Colorado.  Scenic Railway turned right around and sold 12 to the MIdwest Central in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, who started to reassemble the locomotive but stopped the project due to insufficiant funding of rthe boiler replacement. Gary Norton bought the engine in 1988 and reassembled it with the help of Midwest Central.

Ownership History:

Built:12/1928 for Kahului Railroad Honululu HI

Sold 1968 to Private individual in California

Sold 1980 to Midwest Central Railroad in IA

Sold 1987 to Gary Norton for Silverwood

This engine is not on its original boiler.  The original had become damaged beyond repair during on of the moves.  Midwest Central started the rebuild but stopped because the new boiler could not have been afforded.  Gary Norton bought it and contracted Midwest Central to finish the restoration to operation.  It has seen very little use because #7 has enough power to pull 5 cars up the 3.2% grade and because of the reputation it has.

It was built by Baldwin in 1928 as construction #60690 for the Kahului RR.  I heard they used it til 1966 or 1972 when it was sold to the Midwest Central in Iowa who in 1980 or so did some basic rebuilding on the engine.  Gary Norton bought it in 1987 andused it as a backup for Eureka Nevada # 7 until 2002 when it was put up for sale.  In conversation with the chief engineer, named Walt, I was told that the engine had some basic problems such as a sticky throttle andhardly functional air brakes.  He and Jerry vowed to never again run it after a 2 week stand in 2001 during which it almost ran away.

This locomotive was used by the Kahalui RR in Hawaii for at least a part of its life; it may have been built for the Kahalui, which I've heard was a banana plantation railroad.

Many thanks to Robert Temple for the photograph, and the technical details of this locomotive. Still looking for its Construction Number and ownership history.
