Currently as of writing this memo, #17 is still down, but work is continuing at a fairly decent rate. With any luck, she may return to service next year, barring any unforeseen setbacks.

17 went down for her 1472 a few weeks ago. It is unknown when she is due back, but it can be anywhere from a few months to a year.

David Dick of the New Hope Valley Railway provided the following information:

Vulcan locomotive number 17 was built in 1941 by Vulcan Iron Works for the New York Ship Building Corporation in Camden, New Jersey. Her original number at that time was U.S.N.X 2025. In 1948 she was sold to the Carbon Limestone Company. At Carbon Limestone she served in and around the quarry for a few years and then put away in storage. The New Hope Valley Railway and the North Carolina Railroad Museum purchased the locomotive in 1999, from her previous owner who had hopes of restoring the engine to operational condition, but never completed the task. In 2000 the steam operations group from the New Hope Valley Railway started an extensive restoration project on the locomotive, which included bringing the locomotive up to current FRA regulations. Finally in the summer of 2002,  number 17 was test fired and moved under her own power for the first time in about 50 years. In the 2003 season we hope to have her working the yard on a regular basis as well as heading up our trains on special weekends. We also have plans to include number 17 in our operate a locomotive program.
