Former Victorian Railways J class No.550 was built in 1954. J550 was part of the 2nd half of an order of 60 J class(J500-J559) locomotives which was unsuccessful in an attempt to cancel it which resulted in the VR editing the order where 30(J530-J559) would be built as oil burners. J550 had a service life of 17 and a half years in service and was purchased by Steamrail Victoria for preservation, J550 was stripped of all usable parts(including whistle) and was given dummy(fake/non-working replicas) before being exchanged with A2 986 on the condition that steamrail keep up its paint job and do any required work on it. after sitting in warragul for around 3 decades J550 was sold off to a historical society that was rebuilding Noojee railway station with the J becoming the main attraction as a static display piece
