One of a class of 60 locos built in the UK. The first 30 were coal fired, the rest oil burners. They were the last steam class ordered by Victoria Railways who already had mainline diesel locos operating. They were built to easily be converted from broad to standard gauge for operating passenger and freight trains on branch lines.

549 was a oil burner. Began working in 1954 and worked until 1970, when stored at Ararat. Having travelled over 150,000 miles in service. Sold to the Victoria Goldfield railway in 1979. Was operational by 1991. Removed from traffic 2004 for extensive overhaul. Back in steam in 2013.
