This is one of 5 locos built in 1936 for the CNR designated u4a. The GTW had 6 similar locos built in 1938 designated u4b. The difference between the two types was shape of the air inlet at the top front of the loco.

On the royal tour of 1939 through Southern Ontario the engineers and firemen were chosen by a point system. While on a run ending up in Hamilton Ontario my grandfater Thomas Barker Hallam lacked one point to be the engineer so he was the fireman for the run between Kingston and Belleville. He was brought back to Kingston and was intorduced to the King and Queen before the run. He used two pairs of gloves for that fifty mile trip. One pair to work with and the other to keep clean to meet the Royal couple. This part of history is something that will always be apart of our family because I will never let it go unheard. It is our duty to keep these memroies alive and to tell them to the generations that follow us. To all of you who have connections to this endearing era I encourage you to keep it alive. There is still some of us around that have stories to tell and memories to share. I welcome one and all. Thank you Thomas Kyle Hallam

As per George S's note, "Str" stands for "Stream Lined". Also, the 6400's were 4-8-4 Northerns, not 4-6-4's which were Hudsons. 5700 to 5704 were the only traditional style Hudsons Canadian National every had.

The "Alco-Montreal Construction Number List" indicates that Construction Numbers 68715 through 68719, Road Numbers 6400 through 6404, were shipped to "Canadian National" during June of 1936. All of the units were 4-6-4's. Also, the list noted that these units were "(Str. Lined)"; I don't know what "Str." is an abbreviation of. Does anyone know?
