I would agree with Brian, having originally ‘missed’ the location of this locomotive during my initial perusal, that it could well be Krauss No. 3332, the date of 1896 is also correct; not Maffei (or indeed K-M). I have it down as Kiu-Schiu Railway No. 44, then Kanto Railway No. 1412 and was on display (wherever) by 1990. If consensus can be attained perhaps this file can be merged with No. 3332 adjusting the date slightly ? I will consult my Japanese map, purchased whilst in Japan to ascertain the Prefecture of Mibu, Tochigi though that information is probably several decades old.

May be a more local enthusiast in Japan needs to check this out either personally on-line with the school with the O&K locomotive on isplay, and/or it’s Principal ?

As there is considerable discussion about this one. I will leave well alone until some certainty is firmly established.

Another possibility is Krauss München 3332 of 1896 which was Kanto Rly 1412 and listed as preserved at Mibu-Omachanomachi reported in August 2015 but it is listed on this site elsewhere.

Thanks to both Brian and ILFORD for comments. I previously checked a list of extant locomotives for Maffei and find only two, both attributed to South Africa Railways of 1067mm or 3’, during it’s existence up to 1930. The note supplied by Brian seems more likely as I have O&K 10775 supplied through Otto Reimers & Co., Tokyo to Kawasaki Seitetso of Japan (no prefecture) and when withdrawn going to Narashino Primary School, Kami-ga-ura (no actual dates given) and therefore our files could in fact be duplicated if this is the same locomotive, but clearly still Not Krauss-Maffei. I may come across further information whilst working through more builder’s! Sorry for now ILFORD, but thanks for your info.

Details as given but built by Krauss Munchen in 1897, a plinth in a playground. No date recorded or seen.

In my list for Chibaprefecture the only likely contender is in Narashino where Chiba Steel NUS 3 is preserved and this is O&K 10775 of 1926.

With no image or date it is difficult to establish it’s identity but it is doubtful if this can be accredited to the present builder as I have yet to come across any extant locomotives sent to Japan. Possible but inprobable!
