The pioneer tunnel 1 (ex LVC 123) Locomotive in winter-spring of 2018 recieved a complete ground up rebuild. in cooperation with Railway restoration project 113 and Oaks Welding and Line Boring, the rebuild was to correct some major mechanical and boiler headaches. The work included 4 new axle boxes, new dry pipe and steam piping in smokebox reverted to original, all new Schedule 80 piping, new rod brasses, new ash pan, all new valves and check valves, spring rigging, and lastly brake rigging was all renewed. After a successful operating season in 2018 the decision was made in January 2019 to finish the much needed repairs that could not be done winter- spring of 2018 which includes correction of valve gear timing, Boeing of cylinders, replacement of worn out piston and valve rods, improved gaskets on gasketedsurfaces, and modification of front pilot beam. Once all work is complete attention will then go after Pioneer Tunnel lokie 2 (LVC 119) Tyler Fenderson Steam Dept. Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train Ride

Pioneer tunnel claims both lokies are Ex William J. Gilbert locomotives where in fact the national board numbers and builders numbers for both engines indicate they never worked or operated for the William j Gilbert company at all and are in fact Lehigh Valley Coal Company engines 119 and 123. Suspicious as to how the whole Gilbert Fallacy came about. Upsetting that such a nice place Mis informs the public.

Over the winter, she received a newly fabricated saddle tank to hold the water, and also has a different headlight.

David Linn, William J Gilbert was my great grandfather, William J Gilbert II was my grandfather, and William J Gilbert III is my father. Small world.

I believe this lokie was purchased new by my grandfather, William J. Gilbert, who was a coal contractor in Hazleton. After he passed away and his company closed, it was acquired by the Lehigh Valley Coal Co.

One note about this locomotiv is that it operates with anrthacite coal, uses steam brakes, and usually only has one person who enineers/fires.

A pleasant conversation with a staff member at the Pioneer Tunnel Anthracite Coal Mine Tour and Narrow Gauge Train Ride confirms the presence of this locomotive, a backup to the "Henry Clay". This Vulcan tank engine is currently undergoing restoration.
