While I love #1070 and had the opportunity to ride behind it many years ago, there is another locomotive that operated in every decade of the 20th century. While Sierra Railroad #3 was down from 1932 to 1948, it was very active before and after. A rebuild, that ultimately included a new boiler, began in 1996.

NP 1070 is rumored to be the only standard guage steam locomotive in America to operate in every decade of the 20th century (or any century for that matter).  It operated under State law and inspections since 1958 when it was first owned by Simpson Lumber Company.  When the FRA began assuming jurisdiction of State regulated railroads, NP 1070 was granted an exemption by the FRA during the George H. W. Bush administration.  The exemption began to be ignored by the FRA during the Clinton administration, so the locomotive was retired in fully operational condition (the boiler is in superb shape).

The "Alco-Manchester Construction Number List" indicates that Construction Numbers 41874 through 41883, Road Numbers 1065 through 1074, were shipped to "Northern Pacific" during February and March of 1907. All of the units were 0-6-0's and had a "Specified" total weight of 148,000 pounds (This is not necessarily the "Actual" total weight).

The status of #1070 is now storage, as it has been kept inside Lake Whatcom's enginehouse since being condemned.  No word of any restoration work has reached my ears.

1070 no longer operates.  The FRA condemed her in June of 1998.  She was last steamed in July for the delivery of the deisel that replaced her in excoursion duty.
