Pines & Hardwood of Australia Ltd had this loco from 1925. They named it SOWARD. Along with 2 other climax locos it worked the logging tramways around the town of Simsville, NSW. In 1939 sold to Australian Newsprint Mills who had just built a paper mill in Boyer, in the Derwent Valley north of Hobart, Tasmania. 1653 worked at their logging concession in the nearby Florentine Valley. 1949 found it abandoned at Maydena, a logging town built to provide amenities for men working the concession. In 1977 Australian Newsprint donated 1653 to the Tasmanian Transport Museum.
