As the build date shows, this is an early loco for the Grand Junction Railway, later part of the London & North Western Railway. What the photo shows is that it has outside cylinders. This is a response to the Stephenson 'Patentee' type whose inside cylinders necessitated a crank axle for the driving wheels. These axles were known to fail with disasterous consequences, so the plain axle of the loco with outside cylinders was chosen by the designer, Alexander Allan.
