SR 4-4-0T No. 4Posted by: Eddie Wearing on Apr 17, 2026 @ 16:04:46
This engine has been reported as 333, 371 and 372. All three were 4 4 0Ts of 3ft 6 gauge. The name has been reported as Sphinx, which implies 333 or 372. 333 and 334 were delivered to Egypt in 1884 and may have been sold on to Sudan later. 371 to 374 were also 3ft 6 gauge 4 4 0Ts, possibly of the same design, delivered direct to the Sudan Military Railway in 1885, later renamed the Sudan Government Railway. SGR had a Class of 6 such locos, suggesting that they were all SGR engines eventually The sole survivor is probably 371 but this is uncertain.

I find it difficult to believe that a locomotive of the design shown in the photo would have been built by Sharp Stewart. I clearly follows American practice of the era. That said, I will leave the photo there in to forlorn hope that someone can identify the locomotive at this location - perhaps this is the loco and its not a Sharp Stewart at all, or if it is a Sharp Stewart, perhaps a true photo can materialise.
