London Midland & Scottish Railway 4-6-0 No. 45000 (5000)Posted by: Russell Newman on Dec 2, 2024 @ 15:12:04
This is the history of ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 5000, which was the first of the Crewe built Stanier designed Black Fives and the alleged prototype of the Class to be built for the London Midland & Scottish Railway in 1935. But not the first to be built as that fell to No. 5020 from the very first batch built by the Vulcan foundry works in 1934. No. 5000 was built with a low degree superheat domeless boiler. It was later numbered to No. 45000 under British Railways from 1948 and was later withdrawn from service in May 1967, having been shedded at Lostock Hall Depot during its last months of service with BR. No. 45000 was selected to represent the Black Fives as part of the National Collection and was stored at Preston Park in Brighton for some years. In 1977 No. 45000 was loaned to the Severn Valley Railway, where it was restored to full working order and back to its LMS livery as No. 5000, there in 1979 in time for it to take part in the Rocket 150 celebrations at Rainhill in May 1980. During the 1980s No. 5000 enjoyed several good seasons operating at the Severn Valley Railway as well as some mainline running as well. It was withdrawn from service following a failed steam test at the start of the 1989 season, and was returned to the National Railway Museum in the spring of 1991 and went on static display at York. No. 5000 was moved for display at Locomotion at Shildon in Durham, where it remains on current display there.

A user has suggested that this locomotive has been moved to Phnom Penh, but the EXIF data in the image taken by Alan Short indicates that the locomotive was inside the Battambang Railway Shed in March of 2019. We could find no information to corroborate the suggestion made by site visitor Hai Pang, so no change to the location of this locomotive has been made.
