British Railways 4-6-0 No. 1306 'Mayflower'Posted by: Russell Newman on Apr 26, 2021 @ 06:04:25
Here is the history of No. 61306 "Mayflower". She was built in 1948 by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, Scotland for the London & North Eastern Railway from the designs of Edward Thompson who was the second chief Mechanical Engineer for the LNER. But 1948 was the year when British Railways was formed and she carried the Number 61306 from new. She was first allocated to Hull Botanic Gardens Depot followed by a spell at Hull Dairycotes Depot before being finally transferred to Low Moor Depot, Bradford. She was the last of the B1 Class in service and her final trip under British Railways before withdrawal from service was hauling the "Yorkshire Pullman" from Leeds in September 1967 which was the last time this train was hauled by steam. No. 61306 was immediately purchased for preservation and was initially based at Steamtown in Carnforth. She was fully restored for mainline operation and worked a number of rail tours in the 1970’s. But round then she carried what would have been her LNER Number No. 1306 which she never carried and she never carried a name at all as the name "Mayflower" came from long lost sister B1 No. 61379. but was given to 61306 in preservation. In 1978 the locomotive was moved to the Great Central Railway where she ran for a number of seasons there during the 1980’s. She was moved again to the Nene Valley Railway where she had another overhaul and ran there in the early to mid 2000’s which by then she had been sold to the Boden family in 2006. She was sold to her current owner David Buck in 2014, she returned to the mainline in 2015 before being withdrawn for an extensive overhaul. Resplendent in the early British Railways apple green livery as she was originally given when delivered in 1948 she returned to full mainline operation in early 2019 and has been a top mainline performer ever since mainly working trains for Steam Dreams which her owner David Buck is head of.

LNER (War Department) 0-6-0ST No. 68078 (71463)Posted by: Russell Newman on Apr 24, 2021 @ 10:04:09
No. 68078 is the second ex London & North Eastern Railway J94 Austerity 0-6-0ST to survive in preservation out of 75 locomotives that were sold to the LNER and classified as J94. Built in 1946 by Andrew Barclay at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in Scotland as WD No. 71463 she was sold to the LNER in July that year and given the LNER Number No. 8078 which this would later be changed to No. 68078 under British Railways from 1948. No. 68078 would spend much of her working life round Lincolnshire and the North being shedded at Immingham, Thornaby and Langwith Junction sheds from 1948 until 1961. Like her sisters that worked on the LNER it too was fitted with an extended coal bunker. Withdrawn from British Railways service in March 1963 she was sold off to Derek Crouch Ltd and was used in Northumberland at Widdrington Disposal Point. In 1975 No. 68078 was the last steam locomotive in commercial industrial use in Northumberland. She was then sold off for preservation being stored at the then GW Preservation Society at Southall in West London in October 1987. It moved again for further storage at the former ROF establishment at Hayes in Middlesex. She was moved again to her current base at the private site at Sellindge in Kent where No. 68078 is under restoration which is still ongoing but in a recent report her chassis is now back on its wheels and its cab and bunker have been refitted.

London & North Eastern Railway (War Department) 0-6-0ST No. 68077 (71466)Posted by: Russell Newman on Apr 24, 2021 @ 10:04:50
One of only two genuine WD Austerity 0-6-0ST’s that were bought by the London & North Eastern Railway as Class J94 to survive into preservation out of 75 locomotives that were sold to the LNER and classified as J94. Built in 1947 by Andrew Barclay in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in Scotland and starting out as WD No. 71466 she was sold to the LNER in the same year she was built and was giving the LNER Number No. 8077 and from 1948 was giving the British Railways No. 68077. She spent much of her working life on shunting and short goods workings round North London and round Lincolnshire being moving to Immingham, Hornsey, Boston and Colwick sheds from 1948 until 1962. In August 1949 like all the other J94’s with the LNER it was fitted with an extended coal bunker. Withdrawn from British Railways service in December 1962 she was sold off to work a little longer with the National Coal Board (NCB) for use in the South Yorkshire Area. Now Numbered No. 14 No. 68077 worked at Maltby Main Colliery until 1970 when she was placed into storage until 1971 when she was sold for preservation to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. No. 68077 was steamed shortly after this but it required attention and the fitting of vacuum brakes before it could even haul any passenger trains there. She was sold again to a private owner who moved her to the Spa Valley Railway in Kent in 2005 where No. 68077 awaits overhaul which the Spa Valley plans to do so in the not to distant future.
