5917 is one of 20 D59 class locomotives purchased by the NSWGR 1953-1953. Originaly built as oil burners, most were converted to coal firing.

59 class locomotives were amoungst the last steam locomotive in service in NSW, the last being withdrawn from service in December 1972. 5917 was withdrawn August 1972 after having traveled 806,735km in 19 years of service. It was saved from scraping by a small group of enthuiasts and continued to earn its keep hauling tour trains until c1987 when its Boiler was condemned.

It is presently undergoing restoration for a return to full working order in the next 2-3 years
